When a Myanmar helper’s arrival is postponed, the impact on a family can be significant. Travel difficulties and outstanding departure arrangements can affect the journey, even after a helper has been selected. However, a delay is not inevitable for every Myanmar helper: the reason and revised timeline should be explained for each case.
MOM has warned agencies about Myanmar travel difficulties
In its employment agency alert dated 4 February 2025, Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower referred to Myanmar’s state of emergency, martial law in an increasing number of townships and reports of travel restrictions. MOM advised agencies to monitor developments, inform employers about potential travel difficulties and assist employers when requested.
This is a dated advisory, not a live travel-status report. It does not establish which restrictions apply today, the reason for a particular helper’s delay or how long that delay will last.
Singapore approval is one part of the journey
MOM’s application guidance tells employers to check with the helper’s embassy about additional requirements for leaving her home country. It also requires the particulars on the in-principle approval (IPA) to match her passport. Singapore approval therefore needs to be considered alongside the applicable Myanmar departure requirements. For your Myanmar helper, ask whether her passport and applicable departure documents or permissions are ready. An application being submitted is different from the required approval being received. First-time departures and returns after home leave may involve different checks; confirm the process for her situation.
Why a provisional arrival date may move
A date discussed during selection is a planning estimate if essential steps remain unfinished. When documents, clearance or travel arrangements are still being confirmed, ask what the estimate depends on. A booked flight alone should not be treated as evidence that every required step is complete.
These are points to check, not a diagnosis of your helper’s case. Avoid assuming that a reported problem elsewhere in Myanmar affects her route. Request the information relevant to her actual journey.
What employers should ask the agency
- What is pending? Ask for the specific document, approval or travel arrangement.
- What has been completed? Separate confirmed progress from an expected outcome.
- Who is taking the next step? Confirm whether anything is needed from you or the helper.
- When will we hear again? Agree on the next update, even if a new arrival date is not yet available.
- Has the handover date changed? Confirm when the helper is expected to join your household after arrival.
Plan for the household while waiting
If your family needs childcare or eldercare by a particular date, tell the consultant early and keep a temporary care plan available. Before making changes to bookings or other arrangements, discuss any costs and the applicable agreement terms.
A delay alone does not show that the helper or agency is at fault. Agencies should still explain the known cause, follow up on outstanding steps and communicate clearly. A general reference to “Myanmar delays” is less useful than a specific update about your helper.
