Choosing a hiring route

Fresh helper or transfer helper: which route fits your family?

Neither route is automatically better. The right choice depends on your household, timeline, training capacity and the individual helper.

What “fresh helper” usually means

A fresh MDW is generally arriving from overseas for a new Singapore placement. She may be new to Singapore or may have prior experience elsewhere. Employers should plan for orientation, gradual instruction and adjustment.

What “transfer helper” means

A transfer helper is already employed or residing in Singapore under the applicable transfer process. She may understand local homes and routines, but employers should still assess her individual experience and reasons for transfer fairly.

Compare the individual—not only the label

  • Relevant childcare, eldercare, cooking or household experience.
  • Communication and willingness to learn.
  • Your available time for training and adjustment.
  • Current availability and the realistic application timeline.
  • Job scope, rest, accommodation and mutual expectations.

Interview more than one suitable person where possible. A thoughtful match is stronger than choosing solely by speed, nationality or years of experience.
