First-time employer guide

Engaging a helper for the first time in Singapore

A practical starting point for eligibility, orientation, household planning, interviews and the first weeks together.

First-time employers must complete the Employers’ Orientation Programme before a Work Permit application is submitted. The programme covers the employer’s responsibilities and should be completed at least two working days before application.

Start with the job—not a nationality

Write down who lives in your home, the tasks that genuinely need support, care routines, cooking preferences, pets, language needs, rest-day arrangements and where the helper will sleep. This creates a realistic job scope for interviews.

Complete the required orientation

MOM states that first-time employers must attend the three-hour EOP. Classroom and online options are available. Read the current MOM EOP requirements before applying.

Prepare for the complete cost

Plan for more than a service fee: placement-related amounts, mandatory processing, insurance, salary, levy, food, medical care, accommodation and other household expenses may apply. Ask for an itemised quotation.

Interview for real situations

  • Ask for examples of previous childcare or eldercare routines.
  • Describe your household size and daily schedule honestly.
  • Discuss food, communication, pets, rest days and phone use.
  • Allow the helper to ask questions about your home.

Plan the first month

Use a written schedule as a teaching aid, demonstrate appliances and safety rules, explain priorities gradually, hold short weekly check-ins and expect an adjustment period for everyone.

Practical summary

What to remember.

  • Define the real household role before reviewing biodata or choosing a source country.
  • Budget for both the one-time hiring quotation and ongoing salary, levy, food, medical and household costs.
  • A dedicated Jans Maid & Employment Agency consultant can guide you from shortlisting through the helper’s 24-month employment period.
Direct answers

Frequently asked questions.

These answers are general. Current requirements and case-specific terms should be confirmed before you proceed.

What is the first step for a first-time helper employer?

Describe your household members, care needs, daily routines, preferred timeline and practical expectations. This gives the consultant a useful brief for eligibility checks and shortlisting.

Must a first-time employer complete the Employers’ Orientation Programme?

MOM requires first-time employers to complete the EOP before the Work Permit application. Check MOM for the current course format, exemptions and timing requirements.

Should I choose a helper based mainly on nationality?

No. Source country may affect language, availability and processing, but the individual helper’s experience, communication, expectations and fit with the actual job scope matter more.
